Surya is a cozy, ocean side yoga studio built on the idea of community, just like Venice. When you walk in the door we want you to feel welcome, supported, and inspired. That’s exactly why we keep our class sizes small and our teaching staff tight-knit.

Our class sizes are limited to seventeen students so that you have the space to explore your practice, and get the adjustments you need to take your yoga a step further. To ensure you have a spot, please arrive 10 minutes early for class.
From previous experience we can tell you that the first 2 months of our Groupon special are extremely busy, so keep in mind you have a whole year to activate your pass.

As this Groupon offer is for people who are new to our studio, we wanted to make this experience as easy and convenient as possible. Below we have put together a list of FAQ’s that will help introduce you to the studio. So read on and we look forward to seeing you on the mat!

How do I activate my pass?

When you are ready to use your pass, simply arrive 10 minutes early for you first class. Please bring either a printed out copy of your Groupon or have it available on your smart phone.

How long do I have to activate my Groupon?

You have a year from the purchase date to activate it. Once activated you have 3 months from the date of activation to complete your pass. Unfortunately, we cannot extend or hold your pass for any reason.

Can I share my pass?

Your Groupon pass cannot be shared.

What if I have been to the studio before?

This special is for NEW STUDENTS ONLY.
Whether you mistakenly purchased the Groupon for yourself or received it as a gift, if you have previously been to the studio, we cannot accept the pass. If this is the case, you have a couple options: You can contact Groupon directly at http://www.groupon.com/groupon-promise or by phone at (877) 788-7858 to receive a refund. Or better yet, you can share the love and gift it to someone new.

What is the parking situation?
Parking during the day is limited to street parking. After 6pm you may use the metered parking along Main Street for free. You may also park in the lot behind the studio in the customer only spaces for classes beginning after 6pm.
Our favorite streets for parking: Market St, Windward Ave and Grand Blvd.

For those who prefer pedal power over horse power we have ample bike racks available.

From its tranquil white sand beaches and crystal clear water to its ancient Mayan ruins, Tulum is a hidden paradise…a one of a kind destination. This is a perfect getaway to rediscover yourself, meet new friends, play in the sun and experience yoga in a place beyond anything you imagine.

When: October 15 – 20th

Cost: $1550 All Inclusive (excluding airfare and transportation)
EARLY BIRD SPECIAL $1350

YOGA ~ The Wonders of Tulum
Tulum is said by the Mayans to be the sacred location of the throat chakra. It is a mystical place where our words, thoughts and intentions can become our reality. It is this energy that makes Tulum the perfect place for us to enjoy the many healing benefits of our practice.

Shambala’s yoga studio is the ultimate place to experience yoga in paradise. The palapa style structure features natural teak floors that make way for the 25 foot palm tree that grows up through the thatched roof. The floor to ceiling windows wrap around 3 sides of the studio providing beautiful views of the white sand beach and tropical blue ocean. Nothing is more invigorating than sliding the windows open and feeling the ocean breeze gently cool you as you move through your practice. The calming sound of the ocean a constant reminder of our own breath.

We will be offering a morning and evening yoga session:

MORNING CLASSES ~ The morning class will begin with pranayama to awaken the body through breath. You will then be lead through an invigorating series of asanas that will refresh and energize your mind and body. Class ends with meditation and setting our intention for the day.

EVENING CLASSES ~ We will end each beautiful day in paradise with a gentle deep stretch candlelit class. Our practice will focus on relaxing into the deepest layers of the body to help us return to state of release and surrender. Perfect for a blissful slumber!

DOWNTIME
Simply relax on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, or enjoy an excursion to one of Tulum’s magical ancient sights. Bask in the sun on one of the resort’s large gorgeous daybeds, or read under the shade of a palm.

Included in the retreat is a visit to the Tulum Ruins. This ancient site, located on the cliffs overlooking the expansive crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, dates back thousands of years. Tulum was one of the most formidable trading ports of the Mayans. The ornately carved structures give you a true glimpse into this amazing civilization, transporting you right into the daily life of these mysterious people.

A couple other options to fill your days:

GRAN CENOTE The cenotes are one of the most unique and exciting experiences found only in this part of the world. Snorkel in the crystal clear fresh water and see a world of awe-inspiring stalagmites and stalactites, where rays of sunlight pierce the water illuminating the cavern floor. Ferns, lilies and a variety of tropical plant life flourish in this unique eco-system which also plays host to fish, turtles and exotic birds. It is unlike anything you have ever seen.

Just down the road from Shambala, lies an eco-reserve that is home to one of nature’s true gentle giants…the manatee. They have made their home in a lagoon that is both fresh and sea water thanks to the underwater cenotes. This reserve is also known for the large number of aquatic bird species it attracts.

Just a short 30 minute drive from Shambala is a Sea Turtle sanctuary. The sanctuary is located just off a public beach and is completely free. Bring snorkeling gear and you can get up close and personal with these beautiful creatures.

If you still feel the need to unwind after all this beauty and tranquility, you can choose from a variety of massage options to be enjoyed on the beach or in the comfort of your own room.

DINING ~ All Meals are included. The cuisine at Shambala is absolutely divine. Enjoy delicious dishes prepared by a 5 star chef. You will be anxiously waiting to see what each new dining experience brings. All meals are made with locally grown vegetables and fresh fish caught daily.
Why we love Jessica ~ Jessica lights up the room with her incredible energy and contagious smile. She approaches her practice seriously but reminds us that joy and laughter are an essential part of yoga and life. We love Jessica and the spirit she brings to every class.

1- Do your remember your “aha!” moment in yoga? (when yoga clicked for you)?
Yes. I realized that I didn’t want to go through life not being able to touch my toes. What would my future kids think?

2- What is your favorite part of yoga?
My favorite part of yoga is the next day. I love waking up with a slight ache, just enough for me to know that I am building a strong body and mind.

3- What is your favorite pose and why?
Urdhva Dhanurasana (wheel pose) because is feels so natural and also gives me a little energy kick.

4- How often do you practice?
Currently, I practice 3 times a week. My goal is to eventually practice 4-5 times a week.

5 – What are your own personal DO’s and DONT’s in yoga?

DO:
Thank your teacher
Bike! The bus is cool too.
Bring back the hair ties (a personal goal of mine)

Don’t
Take yourself too seriously

6- Why Studio Surya?

The warmth and collective energy everyone brings to the mat amazes me. I love the teachers, students, and space, and couldn’t imagine practicing anywhere else!

Do your remember your “aha!” moment in yoga? (When yoga clicked for you)?
I had an injury due to a car accident and someone recommended that I do yoga as part of the recovery. As I had never done yoga before, and knew myself well enough to know that after the first class I might not return, I made a commitment that I was going to go for one week straight. The first class was really difficult and the next day every part of my body was sore… but I went back again and again. After the first couple of classes of just trying to survive, something began to shift. My body began to open to the experience and something just clicked. That was over a year ago and I am still loving it.

What is your favorite part of yoga?
Savasana is my favorite part of yoga. After an exhilarating practice, there is something magical about taking the time to simply sit in the stillness of my body. I feel both completely calmed and at the same time my body is enlivened…. also the lavender eye-pillows are a little bit of heaven.

What is your favorite pose and why?
My favorite pose is vikasana (tree pose). I used to do this pose with my cousin when I was young. It felt natural as a child and I enjoy that it still resonates with the same ease even today.

How often do you practice?
I tend to practice 3 times a week.

What are your own personal DO’s and DON’Ts in yoga.
Wash your feet before you come to class.

Why Studio Surya?
I like Studio Surya because there is a warmth and approachability about the studio. The class sizes are small so you get to know the other people in class. It feels like a community. Plus the teachers are great and they seem to really want the students to just enjoy being there and their practice.

Cost: $1550 All Inclusive (excluding airfare and transportation)
EARLY BIRD SPECIAL $1350 ~ Sign up before April 7th 2011

This ancient site, located on the cliffs overlooking the expansive crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, date back thousands of years.

Enjoy the flavor of the local cuisine prepared by a 5 star chef. All meals are made with locally grown vegetables and fresh fish caught daily.
